BUILDING A VIRAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN

VIRAL MARKETING CAMPAIGN

Like many, when you hear the term "Viral" it doesn't sound right. After all, a virus is not a good thing. When we think of a virus, you think of illness, computer problems etc. However, when it comes to building a marketing campaign it's a whole different thing.

Jay Levinson has written a new 4th edition to his series of books on Guerrilla Marketing. I highly suggest this as something to read because he has an entire section devoted to Viral Marketing. Take a look at it by clicking here.

DEFINITION of VIRAL MARKETING

This is when a marketer uses methods to get people to pass a marketing message on to other people. Hopefully by e-mail or some other form of electronic media. This makes it possible for exponential growth of the message.

So then, like a virus it takes advantage of rapid multiplication and explodes the message to hundreds, thousands and perhaps millions.

Let's illustrate:

Your walking along the street one day. A stranger approaches and offers you two choices. He says, "I'll give you 1 million dollars 30 days from now or you can take one penny and have me double it everyday for 30 days." While it's tempting to take the million, you know that through the power of compounding the prize may be better. Guess what? You're right, a penny doubled everyday for 30 days equals $5,368,709.12. Making the second choice pays off much better.

Using Viral Marketing is much the same way. Although it does not double everyday, the power of multiplication can work in your favor.

A great example of this is Hotmail. Remember how they did it? They gave away free e-mail services and soon they had millions of subscribers. All from a small tag line at the bottom of each e-mail sent by those using the free service.

VIRAL MARKETING STRATEGIES

While some strategies work better than others, not many have worked as nicely as Hotmail. You can began building a successful viral marketing campaign if you keep the following 6 things in mind.

1) You need to give away FREE products or services

2) This product or service must be easy to pass around

3) It has to have the ability to multiply quickly

4) Plays on what motivates others or reacts to their behaviors

5) Uses networks that already exist (E-Mail address books, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter etc.)

6) Use the resources of others
